Lesser ʻakialoa is thought tohave gone extinct around 1940. I could not find photos of the species taken in the wild, but I made a drawing for carving based on measurements I took from a study
skin.
I also took photos of the study skin to paint the carving.
Restoration of honeycreeper species through carvings, even already extinct
species, is possible as long as study skins are available. With help from
honeycreeper researchers, those carvings can become high-quality display items
for museums. Piano wire is embedded in the narrow carved beak, so those carvings can be made for touch-carving as well.
